A STORY OF LOVE BETWEEN TWO OUTCASTS
1937-71 Near Digby Nova Scotia: a story of love between two outcasts. Despite poverty, and crippling adversity, Maud (Dowley) Lewis, an arthritic woman gets herself “hired on” as a housekeeper for the local fishmonger, Everett. A surly and at times, harsh man. While trying to keep the very small house clean and tidy, for a 2nd income, Maud paints pictures on any found pieces of board and left over house paint.
Even the walls of the house become her canvas at times. Her pictures are of the world as she “sees it”: bright and happy. Her paintings sell well to tourists – giving her some recognition as an artist. So despite a life that has left them both damaged, she and Everett learn to accept each others love.
